Wanderlisting: 5 Best Locations for Winter Sun

It has been a hot minute since I put one of these posts together.

Life so easily gets in the way of doing the things we want to do, whether that’s researching our next journey or decorating that old chest of drawers or whatever it is that really tickles you.

But now I’ve started planning one of the big trips of this year and in doing so I’m back scrolling through destination after destination. It’s honestly like therapy. Some buy clothes, I track flights on SkyScanner (not an ad).

And with the ridiculous cold bout we’ve just had here in London and the #BeastFromTheEast, it’s safe to say I can’t be the only one lusting after some winter sun.

Here are a few of the best spots to travel to from London/the UK for a brief break from the frost – no more than 8 hours on a plane until you’re in sweet, sunny paradise!

1. Tenerife/Lanzarote, Spain

And all of the Canary Islands could be on this list really. No longer bogged down with their bad reputations (anyone else remember when Lanzarote was more commonly known as ‘Lanza-grotty’?), the islands have developed into multi-faceted holiday spots. They cater for all. There are luxurious hotels and resorts which have topped the Conde Nast Gold List, and there are endless holiday apartment rentals and AirBNBs for the more affordable traveller.

Average temperature in March: 21-23 degrees.
Flight time from London: 4 hours 30 minutes.

2. Cape Verde, Africa

Go just one hour further on from the Canary Islands and you will find Cape Verde. The earth is literally volcanic, so you’re guaranteed a nice warm weekend. If you have time, you can even island hop to Sal and Boa Vista which are home to some stunning coastline and vastly empty beaches.

3. Dubai, UAE

If you’re willing to go the extra miles, why not escape to Dubai this winter? The warm sands of the beaches are tempting, but so are the luxurious surroundings of the skyscraping, world-famous hotels and architecture. It’s a glitzy and glam place, and of course very appealing for shoppers.

Average temperature in March: 30 degrees.
Flight time from London: 7 hours.

4. Essaouira, Morocco

Think of Essaouira as the laid back sister of Marrakech. The temperature rarely goes far above or below 20 degrees during the European winter, so it’s a safe bet for those looking for some winter warming. It’s fairly unoccupied by tourists as direct flights to Essaouira from UK only commenced in 2015, so you can make the most of the long curving beach, uninterrupted by others.

Average temperature in March: 21 degrees.
Flight time from London: 3 hours 50 minutes.

5. Abu Dhabi, UAE

Perhaps not quite as glamourous as little sister Dubai, but Abu Dhabi still has a lot to offer in terms of sunshine and activities. It’s the biggest of the islands, and has a tonne of stuff to do. Just recently opened is the Louvre, plus there is an abundance of elegant restaurants on Yas Island and no shortage of chic places to stay.

Love, Chloe. xx
